St. Patrick Irish Penal Tenner Rosary

Constructed with 9mm fancy jasper Aves and a 12mm copper Paternoster, this heavy single decade rosary (tenner) is ring-capped in fumed red brass for durability. The crucifix, St. Patrick medal and ring are handcast in bronze from antique originals and fumed to a fine patina.

The penal tenner (An Paidrín Beag) is a single decade rosary with a crucifix on one end and a ring on the other. Used by Irish Catholics during penal times (17th-18th century AD), such tenners were easily hidden and allowed Catholics to pray the Rosary with less fear of discovery, as penal laws (Na Péindlíthe) were severely enforced by agents of the Crown. The ring is moved from one finger to the next in order to count out the five decades of prayer, whilst being covertly secluded under a sleeve or in a pocket.
